Hispanics hail from more than 20 different nations with countless dialects, different skin colors and varying tastes in food and music. Regardless of these differences Hispanics adapt, fuse cultures and emphasize the importance of religion and family. Hispanics are an integral square in the interwoven quilt of society. Separately, each square is beautiful but each is more splendid and striking when woven together.
Hispanics have influenced our American society in so many ways. The English we speak has many Spanish derivatives. The names of numerous cities and states are derived from the Spanish language. People of other ethnic backgrounds should know that to envision America untouched by Hispanics is to imagine a country without much of its folklore and history. We are entertained by talented Hispanic artists, thrilled by Hispanic sports legends, impressed by Hispanic designers, legislators and other accomplished Hispanics. The countless Hispanic American patriots who gave the ultimate sacrifice in every war and conflict since America’s founding are a special source of Hispanic pride.
In 1968, the United States Congress authorized President Lyndon Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988 its observance was expanded to a month-long celebration to honor our Nation's Hispanic heritage. From September 15 to October 15, the United States celebrates the traditions, ancestry, and unique experiences of those who trace their roots to Spain, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
America's cultural diversity has always been its great strength. Hispanic-American communities have a long and important history of commitment to our Nation's core values. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the many achievements of Hispanic Americans and recognize their contributions to our country. The Month highlights the rich and unique background of our cultures, and gives a better understanding of our respective differences and an appreciation of our similarities.
One need not look far to set their sights on the contributions of Hispanics in Milwaukee’s metropolitan area. We see successful business enterprises, celebrated restaurants, impressive art galleries, exciting performing arts and effective community based organizations. Fueled by determination, dedication and discipline, Hispanics are building stronger communities and promoting upward mobility.
It is important to create a deeper appreciation and awareness of our rich Hispanic cultures; to remember where we came from and to chart a stronger course for the future. Hispanics are more than tacos and margaritas. Hispanics have a proud culture steeped in tradition, family and religion. A heritage shaped by a second-to-none work ethic.
Celebrate with us, come out of your comfort zones; build bridges of understanding and friendship; engage with those who may look and talk different than you. Get to know us- we are doctors, lawyers, professionals and blue color workers from all socio-economic backgrounds. We are an important part in the engine of the state’s economy. Hispanic Americans have provided wisdom, energy and leadership to our communities, and to our country.
Personally speaking, my Hispanic heritage has not only shaped me, it is the core of my being. I have a deeper appreciation of all that is Hispanic from its music to its folklore, tradition and culture.
Raised in an emotionally rich environment, I learned, early on, the importance of a loving and nurturing gamily, the significance of extended family, the benefits of being bilingual. Compassion, strong moral and religious convictions, a strong work ethic, fierce determination and drive are examples of how my Hispanic heritage has shaped my person.
Hispanic Heritage Month means an acknowledgement of my Mexican roots, a connection to my ancestry and a way to ensure cultural continuity. It means a celebration of those that came before me; and a celebration of those who will follow.
