On Wednesday, June 14th I had the unique privilege of welcoming our 2006 scholarship recipients and their families along with an extremely large group of HCCW members and supporters at the HCCW scholarship awards luncheon.
Established in 1993 with the tremendous support of Milwaukee’s first Hispanic Police Chief, Philip Arreola, this latest award cycle of $25,500 augmented a grand total of $372,240 awarded under the auspices of our scholarship program. Since 1993, 31/$10k, 2/$4k, 1/$2500, 1/$1500 32/$1k along with $18,240 in partial scholarships have been awarded. Although business is our business we clearly recognize that education is an issue of community well-being and is the primary source of hope, opportunity and success.
Excerpts from the recipient’s applications were read and they all shared common threads - strong family values, a strong desire to succeed and a fierce determination to overcome all obstacles. I encouraged our recipients to keep their eyes, ears and mind open, for the whole world is a classroom. To always be generous in patience, gratitude and forgiveness; to be grateful for the role models in their lives and to be one for someone else; and to learn from the wisdom of elders and the imagination of children.
Guided by the three “D’s”- dedication, discipline and determination your award-winning HCCW continues to forge ahead to financially assist our undergraduate students. It is a great feeling, knowing that we are assisting, in our own small way, a new generation of educated Hispanics.
We count ourselves fortunate to have Milwaukee’s most energetic and committed individuals serving on our various committees. The formidable task of reviewing applications, interviewing and selecting our scholarship recipients was made easier because of the expertise, time and commitment of our Scholarship Committee. We tip our sombrero to co-chairs, Evelyn Agosto and Eric Serrano and members Patrice Burns, Bernardo Iorio, Andy Melvin, Mike Morales, Lori Reineck, Tammy Wishowski and advisor, Vicky Kalman.
We also gratefully acknowledge this year’s scholarship sponsors – The Milwaukee Wave of Kindness, ¡Aqui! Milwaukee, Jani King of Milwaukee and Jani King of Madison.
We are obviously proud of our success thus far-14 award cycles with $372,240 in scholarship awards- yet we understand that ours is an on-going journey. We thank all participants of our fund-raising events and direct contributors, both large and small for taking the journey with us.
Please continue to invest in our higher-learning initiative with a direct contribution or by participating in our annual fund-raising events.
The trust and confidence that is placed in the HCCW inspires us to work harder and more effectively every day. We know how far we have come and more importantly how much more there is to accomplish.
Mark your calendars for our two remaining HCCW fund-raisers!
