Nationally recognized for its outstanding achievement and success, the mission of the HCCW is to promote, support, and advance the growth and development of Hispanic enterprise. According to a recent study performed by the Center for Women's Studies, there are 5,500 Hispanic owned businesses throughout Wisconsin, of which 1,675 are Latina-owned.
In Wisconsin the Hispanic population has grown more than 107% with no end in sight. High growth rates have also led to an increase in Hispanic-owned businesses due to the entrepreneurial spirit that is inherently part of our rich Hispanic culture. In this ever-changing, knowledge-based economy, Hispanics are no longer only employees and consumers; we now, more than ever, are employers and investors. Hispanics build wealth, participate in our nation's political, legislative, and regulatory processes, and live out the American dream.
However, with every new generation of high-growth Hispanic markets come the growing challenges we face every day to meet the needs of our very large, young, and yet relatively under-served constituency. The growing needs of the Hispanic business community include access to debt and equity capital to fund start-ups as well as future growth. Also vital to the growth and development of Hispanic enterprise is access to management and technical assistance.
The HCCW is the primary Hispanic business association that focuses exclusively on meeting the needs of this rapidly growing group of Hispanic entrepreneurs and business owners. But the HCCW's current office space can no longer adequately support the number and volume of programs and services demanded by our constituents.
As you all know, we are well on our way to raising the $2m goal of our capital campaign to build our new headquarters. Our new facility will allow the HCCW to greatly expand the services it is able to offer to Hispanic businesses. This translates into jobs within the Hispanic community where human capital is in abundance and unemployment rates tend to be higher. Small businesses, including those represented by the HCCW, continue to serve as the engine of economic growth in Wisconsin. Almost all of the net new jobs created today come from within this sector of our economy.
The HCCW needs membership support for the construction of the new facility in the form of corporate or individual donations. Only a very small portion of the Chamber's annual revenue is derived from grants. Indeed, a lone $60,000 block grant accounted for nearly all of our grant revenue in 2003. Instead, HCCW relies on special events (48% of income) and earned revenue (22% of income) for the majority of its annual operating income.
HCCW corporate member, North Shore Bank has offered a challenge grant and will match, dollar for dollar, all Building Fund donations up to $25,000. Please contact the HCCW at 414-643-6963 to make your pledge. A profound gracias for your anticipated support in this most vital endeavor!
