The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin (HCCW) is proud to continue its tradition of celebrating accomplished Hispanic women and addressing issues relevant to upward mobility.

22nd Salute to Hispanic Women Conference & Luncheon – May 15, 2010 - Hilton Milwaukee City Center

This year we are tackling the alarming statistics on Latina teen pregnancies. In partnership with United Way of Greater Milwaukee we will attempt to get past the rhetoric to better probe into the attitudes, behavior, family and cultural influences, relationships, and other related issues surrounding this life-altering issue. We understand that in order for our young Latinas to realize opportunity and hope they must embrace and implement a new era of responsibility; an era that involves motivation and education to prevent teen pregnancy.

Courageous Conversations: Latina Teen Pregnancy - Beyond the Rhetoric

    > “Never doubt that a small group of committed individuals can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.â€
    Margaret Mead.

The 9 am morning conference will feature an ADULT session offered in both English and Spanish and will focus on strengthening parent/child communication while emphasizing the importance of effective communication surrounding this important topic. A communication exercise and steps of active listening will also be incorporated into the session by an expert facilitator.

Our unique approach to this year’s topic will be a TEEN session room with ten (10) separate roundtable discussion groups comprised of ten (10) Latino teens. Each table, hosted by an expert facilitator, will encourage candor with complete anonymity and confidentiality. Other than the adult facilitators, no adults will be allowed entry to the TEEN session room (12-18 years of age.) Our goal is to provide a complete comfort level, void of parental intimidation to engage in frank and candid discussion. All teens will be asked to complete a brief and anonymous survey to better understand behavior patterns, beliefs and attitudes.

Ruthie Flores, Senior Manager -Latino Initiative at the National Campaign to Prevent Teen/Unplanned Pregnancy will give opening remarks at all morning conference sessions and also give the keynote remarks during the noon luncheon. Ms Flores has worked closely with the National Campaign Latino Initiative Advisory Group as well as with numerous national, state and community partners. Her extensive out-reach has also involved faith-based leaders, policy leaders and she serves as a spokesperson with Spanish-language media. One of the country’s leading experts, Ms. Flores will share her compelling message that has identified her as a powerful, charismatic and persuasive voice on this important topic. Gracias, United Way for securing this dynamic expert to assist our efforts.

Our goal is to provide a supportive setting for parents and teens to separately interact with peers and to hear meaningful dialogue designed to stimulate candid discussion and to offer access to valuable resources. While we find the statistics alarming, we will strive to find real answers/solutions that are culturally appropriate and effective. A cordial invitation is extended to elected officials, small business and corporate sectors along with the general public to join us at for this thought- provoking conference and luncheon. The award-winning HCCW appreciates your support and interest as we work towards informing, engaging and empowering our youth towards a brighter future.
