A historic moment for all Americans recently occurred. That is, the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor as the nation’s 111th
Supreme Court Justice and first ever of Hispanic descent - a historic and proud milestone for the nation’s fastest-growing
ethnic group. Sotomayor becomes the third women to serve on the Supreme Court following Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
and former Justice Sandra Day O’Conner.
Despite the partisan tilt to the vote, both sides agreed her legal credentials are impeccable. Her eminent qualifications and
wise committee testimony; her inspirational story of rising from a childhood in the Bronx projects to the highest levels of the
nation’s legal corridors has illustrated that with preparation, dedication and hard work anything is possible! The American
dream is indeed alive and well.
Over the years, it has become increasingly important for our courts to reflect the growing Latino presence in this country.
We thank President Obama and the members of the U.S. Senate for their leadership in selecting a highly qualified and
dedicated public servant to serve our country. This historic confirmation reflects the genuine commitment of our leaders to
promote the legitimacy of the judicial system and secure our community’s trust and confidence in the courts.
It is with great pride and admiration that we celebrate this historic moment; that we celebrate a champion of ideals to which
we all can aspire, namely a strong work ethic and a commitment to public service. The HCCW has every confidence that
Justice Sotomayor will serve with effectiveness and distinction and continue to make us proud.
BRAVO! Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
